What Is the Difference Between an Active Adult (55+) Community and a Life Plan Community?

Are you considering your retirement living options? You've likely heard the terms Active Adult (55+) community and Life Plan Community. Some people erroneously use both terms interchangeably, but there are some stark differences between the two. Understanding how these types of communities vary can help you choose the right option for you.

This article takes a closer look at the differences between an Active Adult ( 55+) community and a Life Plan Community.

Age Restriction

Both Active Adult (55+) and Life Plan Communities typically have age restrictions. As the name suggests, Active Adult (55+) communities often require residents to be at least 55 years old. On the other hand, age requirements at Life Plan Communities vary. While some may welcome residents at age 55, others have higher age requirements, such as 62 or 65 years old.

At Hermitage Roanoke, we welcome seniors age 62 and better.  .

Levels of Support Provided

One of the biggest differences between an Active Adult ( 55+) community and a Life Plan Community is the level of support provided.

Most Active Adult (55+) communities do not provide any type of health care support.  At an Active Adult community, you purchase your own home  and live independently. If you get to the point where you are no longer able to care for yourself, you need to seek out alternative senior living support options.

Life Plan Communities are quite different. They offer a continuum of support that includes Independent Living, Assisted Living and  Nursing services. ng if your care needs increase over time.

This benefit enables  you to age in place and not have to worry  about looking for alternative care in the future.

Hermitage Roanoke offers Independent Living, Assisted Living and Nursing.

Amenities and Services

Life Plan Communities and Active Adult ( 55+) communities both offer an array of amenities, such as swimming pools, fitness centers, tennis courts and walking trails. These amenities can vary significantly, enabling  you to select the community that best matches your needs.

Where things differ between the two options  is the types of services available. If you're looking for a  maintenance-free lifestyle, a Life Plan Community may be a good match. These communities provide housekeeping, laundry, maintenance and transportation services. Dining services are also included.

Alternatively, Active Adult (55+) communities do not offer most of these services. For the most part, Active Adult (55+) communities provide lawn care and snow removal. However, you are responsible for cooking, cleaning and all other interior tasks.

Another major difference is that Active Adult ( 55+) communities generally do not offer on-site health services, so you're expected to plan and manage  your own healthcare. Life Plan Communities work differently. They might have an on-site wellness center or even provide physical, occupational and speech therapy.

More importantly, Life Plan Communities have a team of nurses and certified caregivers on staff. While those in Independent Living do not require supportive services, if you transfer to Assisted Living or  Nursing you will have access to extra support. These supportive services include medication management, assistance with daily activities and specialty care.

Residence  Options

When moving into an Active Adult ( 55+) community, you are expected to purchase your own home. Many communities have single-family homes, and you may also find some communities offering condos or townhomes for sale. Just as you would with any house, you can shop around until you find one that best meets your needs and preferences.

Life Plan Communities also offer a variety of floor plans. These options are typically one- or two-bedroom apartments with a living and kitchen area. Depending on the community, the residences  may even include an outdoor porch or deck to enjoy. Be sure to explore your options to determine the residence style and type that  is right for you.

Financial Structure

Financially, moving into an Active Adult ( 55+) community is likely similar to how you are living right now. You purchase your own home, pay taxes and cover all home maintenance expenses.

Life Plan Communities operate more like rentals. Your monthly service  fee covers your living expenses, use of amenities, dining and access to health services. Instead of paying taxes and a mortgage, you will be contributing to your future healthcare needs and the services available to you.. Depending on your specific situation, this may come with added tax benefits.
